The September 2020 Shortlist

For the second month in our Autumn Season 2020, we partnered with the wonderful Club Soda to dive into the theme ‘Club Sober’. Faced with lots of wonderful nonfiction options, we settled on the following 3 books for our September shortlist:

  • The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray
  • In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts by Gabor Maté
  • The Naked Mind by Annie Grace

With an impressive 58% of the vote, Gabor Maté became our September author.

Who are Club Soda?

We were delighted to partner with friends of RBC, Club Soda. Club Soda is ‘the Mindful Drinking Movement™’. Check them out here – they have a lovely community and extremely helpful courses on offer, we recommend starting with their free 3 day course: ‘How to Change Your Drinking‘.

To hear a bit more about their work, check out our interview with their Co-Founder, Laura Willoughby (MBE – no less!), at this month’s event…

RBC Live! with Club Soda

This month we tried something a little different. Reunited for an extra special broadcast, Ben K and Ben SG broadcast our September event from a Secret London Location.

They were joined live in the studio by Laura from Club Soda, Rich from Mix + Muddle and two inspirational members who are currently training with Dr. Gabor Maté in ‘Compassionate Inquiry‘. Our studio team were also joined virtually, by a lineup of top Alcohol Free drinks makers – more from them here.

Diving into ‘The Realm of Hungry Ghosts’

This month’s read, ‘In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts’, has received critical acclaim by fellow authors, police chiefs and medics alike. This was put beautifully by author Naomi Klein when she says:

Gabor Maté’s connections – between the intensely personal and the global, the spiritual and the medical, the psychological and the political – are bold, wise and deeply moral. He is a healer to be cherished and this exciting book arrives at just the right time.

Our next video revisits our captivating discussion with RBC members, Renée and Xavier, led by Laura from Club Soda…

If you open the video here in YouTube, you can view and skip between the different questions and themes by using time codes and cues within the YouTube description and play bar.

We are so grateful to Renée + Xavier for sharing their stories and insights with us all! Thank you so much to all involved and all of our amazing members who came along to learn, discuss and take on such an important topic in the world today.

Summarising this book in two words does it a huge disservice, but we are sure on one thing, the key message is undoubtedly: ‘More Compassion‘.

In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts scored a whopping 8/10 for Impact with our members. So to close, here are some more inspiring, thought-provoking + impactful takeaways from the book….
